Holiday Ornament

The image for the 2009 Duquesne University Holiday Ornament was taken from the stained glass window that adorns the choir loft in the University Chapel.   The window was a gift from former University President (and current University Chancellor) Dr. John E. Murray, Jr. and his wife Liz.    Upon leaving the chapel on various occasions, Mrs. Murray recognized that the window in the choir loft would be a particularly desirable location for a symbol identifying the Spirit That Gives Life. This was particularly significant in relation to the extensive renovations of the entire chapel on its 100th anniversary.   The depiction of the Holy Spirit is the quintessential identifying symbol of the University, which is now observable by all upon leaving the chapel.    Liz Murray's influence and attention to detail can be seen in a few other enhancements on campus, as well.  All made possible through the Murray's generosity.
