A graduate of Harvard Law School, Judge Richard A. Posner is the first recipient of the Dr. John and Liz Murray Excellence in Scholarship Award at Duquesne University School of Law.  The award is made possible by an endowment fund established in 2011 by Chancellor and Professor of Law John E. Murray Jr. to enhance and enrich the scholarly environment and culture at the Law School.

Judge Posner previously clerked for Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan Jr., served as general counsel of the President's Task Force on Communications Policy, was an associate professor at Stanford Law School and professor at the University of Chicago Law School.  He was appointed judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 1981, serving as chief judge from 1993 to 2000.  In his 30 years as a judge, he has published more than 2,700 opinions.
