Derrick Maultsby, Jr., Class of 2020, Law

Frost Brown Todd LLP

Associate Attorney

Who has inspired you most in your life?

With my father being in and out of my life, being raised by a strong woman made such an impact in creating who I am today. My mother’s determination, agility, and unconditional love gave me the foundational principles to navigate this world as a black man. I am everything I am because of the sacrifices my mother made, and every day I find inspiration in that sacrifice that pushes me to want to make her sacrifice matter.

What aspect(s) of your job do you find most rewarding?

I love being a corporate attorney and working with clients across a spectrum of industries and sizes. However, it is the work I have been able to accomplish leveraging my resources and knowledge that has been the most rewarding. Specifically, the workshops and other legal education resources I am able to make available to underrepresented business owners throughout the country. Over the last several years I have traveled and provided free resources to underrepresented communities. The goal is to provide them with the knowledge to get off to a good start with their business. Historically competent corporate representation has been too costly for small business owners of color, but by supporting these business owners and investing back into those communities I believe we can create true economic change.

What did you like most about attending Duquesne University?

As cliché as it sounds I was in love with the view. Every day that I would walk from the parking garage to class, I would have to stare at the skyline. This served as a vital reminder of my “why” and helped to motivate me.

In your own words, what do you think it means to be a graduate of Duquesne University?

Duquesne University has a long history of excellence in this city. In the School of Law we have a hall of fame and the names and faces never cease to blow my mind. I believe that being a graduate of this university comes with a duty to continue to carry on that legacy and tradition of excellence.

What do you hope to achieve next, professionally or personally?

I hope to continue to focus on what is in my control each day. It is great to have goals, but ultimately the only thing I can focus on achieving is what is right in front of me every day. Brick by brick, day by day, I will be able to build things I can’t even fathom right now.

What do you attribute to your success?

The amazing mentors and champions that have invested into me along the way. Ron Jones, Tony Thompson, Jason Hazlewood, Rebecca Haywood, and the countless others who have poured into me along my journey and continue to do so.

Do you have any personal hobbies or activities you enjoy in your spare time?

I love to hike, play basketball, and watch movies.

What does being selected as a member of the 2023 Dukes from the Last Decade class mean to you?

It is a great honor and a privilege. It serves as recognition of my hard work, as well as validation to keep pushing forward.
